Understanding Aircon PC Board (PCB) Failures & How to Repair Them

The Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is the central command module of modern inverter air conditioners. It regulates everything from fan speeds and louver angles to inverter compressor frequencies.
When a PCB fails, your aircon usually stops functioning completely or blinks error light codes.
Common Causes of PCB Damage
1. Power Surges and Lightning Strikes
Singapore experiences high thunderstorm frequency. Electrical voltage spikes caused by lightning can fry delicate micro-resistors and integrated circuits on the PCB.
2. Moisture and Water Condensation
If water leaks from internal drain pans onto electrical casing covers, high humidity causes short-circuiting on the circuit board traces.
3. Insect and Pest Intrusion
Small geckos, ants, and cockroaches are attracted to warm electrical components inside outdoor and indoor PCB enclosures, causing severe short circuits.
Symptoms of a Faulty PCB
- Aircon indicator light blinks continuously and unit refuses to turn on
- Aircon shuts off unexpectedly after 2-3 minutes
- Indoor fan runs but compressor never receives signal to turn on
- Remote control signal produces no beep response
Repair vs. Replacement
- Micro-Soldering Repair: Replacing damaged fuses, capacitors, or relays on the existing board. This is fast and economical.
- Full PCB Assembly Replacement: Installing a brand-new factory original PCB when main microprocessors are burnt out.
Professional diagnostic testing using digital multimeters ensures accurate identification of board defects before replacing parts.
